The document obtained by Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe enables the commencement of in-depth geological surveys on the site of the first nuclear power plant in Poland. The decision issued by the Ministry of Climate and Environment confirms that the Geological Works Plan submitted by PEJ meets the requirements for this type of investment projects and complies with applicable laws. This is another important task accomplished in the permitting process of the entire project.
Bechtel, a member of the U.S. consortium engaged in the project, is responsible for conducting geological surveys in the Polish Nuclear Power Plants project. Geological works will begin in May and will be carried out at the project site in Choczewo commune over an area of about 30 hectares. These will involve the installation of about 220 survey points, with depths ranging from about 20 to about 210 meters.
The data obtained through the surveys will detail the recognition of geological and engineering and hydrogeological conditions of the site made so far. The survey results will inform the Site Evaluation Report, which is required to obtain a construction license from the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency.
The first stage of the surveys will be completed this year, and the results will also be used in the ongoing design/engineering process of the power plant, conducted under the ESC with the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium. This mainly involves the designing of the main construction facilities, i.e. the three nuclear power units, the forebay and cooling water channels, and the cooling water discharge channel.
