PEJ receives interest in financing for the first Polish nuclear power plant

The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (U.S. DFC), America’s development finance institution, is considering support for a project to build the first Polish nuclear power plant with the equivalent of more than PLN 4 billion. This interest was declared in a letter interest signed by the DFC on 12 November.

‘The involvement of this important entity has more than just a financial dimension for us. It confirms the US administration’s interest in our project,’ said PEJ Finance Division Director, Wojciech Rosiński. He added that the LOI signed by DFC reflects the outcome of months of talks held by PEJ with the institution as well as with other leading institutions from the U.S. market interested not only in Poland but also in the global energy transition.

‘DFC is committed to enhancing regional energy security throughout Central and Eastern Europe. This LOI is a step toward reducing regional reliance on Russian energy exports while also seeking to bolster economic growth and create jobs,’ stated  DFC Head of Investments Agnes Dasewicz. DFC partners with the private sector to finance solutions to the most critical challenges facing the developing world today. It invests across sectors including energy, healthcare, critical infrastructure, and technology.

The letter of interest received from DFC is another document regarding the financing of the Lubiatowo-Kopalino nuclear power plant project. A similar declaration, for the equivalent of about PLN 70 billion, was made earlier by the U.S. Export-Import Bank (Exim Bank), as a result of years of talks with the US company Westinghouse, supported by PEJ and Bechtel since last year. Westinghouse and Bechtel jointly form a U.S. consortium that implements the PEJ investment project in Pomerania. Both DFC and Exim Bank are among the world’s leading financial institutions.

‘I’m so pleased to see this vital project moving forward. Poland’s first nuclear power plant is a symbol of our shared commitment to a clean and secure energy future. A great day for Polish-American relations! The United States is fully committed to supporting Poland’s energy transformation, with strong backing from American financial institutions,’ said  Mark Brzezinski, Ambassador of the United States to Poland
